The terms are regional: "stole" is more common in formal academic settings and in Greek life, while "sash" is the everyday word. Both refer to the same product.

What are the sashes made of?

Double-ply top-quality bridal satin, the same luxurious fabric used in high-end wedding gowns. You feel the difference the moment you pick one up. It has real weight in the hand, a cool, dense, liquid drape that falls straight and stays put on the shoulder instead of creeping and curling, and a deep, saturated sheen rather than a flat shine. Our customers' sashes still look pristine 10, 20, even 30 years later.

Mass-produced sashes are single-ply polyester: one thin layer, light and papery, prone to showing every stitch from the back and to buckling under any real embroidery. Double-ply bridal satin holds up to heavy embroidery and appliqué while keeping its structure and sheen for decades of display. The heavier fabric drapes better and withstands extensive customization.

What length are the sashes, and which cut should I choose?

We make two cuts. The Classic V-Cut is 66 inches, with traditional pointed ends. The Modern Wide-Cut is 70 inches, with diagonal-cut ends, and it is our most popular style. Both are cut to drape properly across the shoulders and hang symmetrically, which is what makes them sit right in photographs. These are our own specifications, not an industry standard.

Choose the Classic V-Cut if your taste is simple and you do not want trim around the sash. It gives a traditional stole look.

Choose the Modern Wide-Cut if you want room to work with. It is available with or without trim, and with its wider width, longer length and special back-of-neck section it accommodates ample customization, so more of your story fits without crowding.

What goes on the front versus the back of a sash?

The front carries scholastic achievement: school initials, seal, class year, degree, major, honors and organizations. The back-of-neck area carries the personal elements: messages to family ("Thank you Mom & Dad," "Para mis Padres"), heritage flags, memorial dedications, or a meaningful quote. The layout balances academic pride with your personal story.

Can I combine different lettering styles on one sash?

Yes, you can combine two lettering styles on one sash. Choose Iconic for your Greek letters on one side and Elite for your school initials on the other, for example. Pick each style based on the emphasis you want that element to carry in your overall design.

For four-letter initials, Classic letters run about 7 inches in overall vertical height, Elite about 10 inches (the most popular), and Iconic about 12 to 13 inches. Mixing styles lets you prioritize what matters most.

How much does a custom graduation sash cost?

It varies. The biggest contributing factor is the amount of customization you want. More elements, more lettering and more intricate techniques all take more design and production work.

Do I need to be a designer to order a custom sash?

No design experience is needed. Signature Series designs are pre-engineered by experts with 37 years of experience. You see it, you love it, you buy it. Choose your layout based on your taste and budget, enter your customization when asked, select your added elements, and we handle the rest.

What information do I need to place an order?

For a Signature Series sash: your school initials (for example, CSUN), your graduation year, your major or program if applicable, and any organizational affiliations you want to include such as Greek letters or honor societies. The design options are shown clearly on each product page.

For a VIP Concierge order, a sketch or a list of must-haves by email is enough to get started.

The timeline is 3+ months, starting in the high $400s, with the final price depending on how much customization you want.

When should I order?

The cutoffs differ by tier, because the work differs.

VIP Concierge: four months before your graduation date. This tier is built from scratch for a select group of graduates, and the design process alone runs for months.

Signature Series and Greek: six weeks before your graduation date, depending on the design.

A sash you send us for customization: six weeks before your graduation date.

Can you add customization to a sash I already own?

Yes. You do not have to buy a sash from us to work with us. We accept sashes you already own, including the official school sashes sold in campus bookstores, and add custom embroidery and appliqué to them.

Send a photo of your existing sash along with your design ideas to info@rochies.com. Once the design is agreed, you either mail the sash to us or drop it off in person at our Northridge facility during designated times, by appointment made in advance. The cutoff for this work is six weeks before your graduation date.

Only the lettering technique. All three use the same double-ply premium bridal satin, the same precision manufacturing, the same California production and the same guarantee. Classic uses precision embroidery, Elite uses one-layer appliqué, and Iconic uses our patented 3D multi-layer appliqué. Letter height grows with the tier, so the difference is visible from across a stadium.

Can I put my Greek letters on it?

Are you a licensed vendor for Greek organizations?

Yes. If your chapter's letters, crest or marks are trademarked, your organization requires an approved licensed vendor, and using an unlicensed shop can put your order at risk. Rochie's Originals holds those licenses for a number of national sororities and fraternities.

Can I include my heritage or my country's flag?

Yes. Heritage is one of the most common things graduates ask us to carry on a sash, and we maintain a library of flags for exactly this reason. If you don't see yours, ask.

Can I add my major or honors?

Yes. School, degree, major, honors and personal details are all part of a custom sash. Layout options vary by how much you want to include, which is part of what the design conversation resolves.

Which graduation year should go on the sash?

The year on your sash should match the year on your diploma. If your ceremony and your conferral date fall in different years, use your diploma year. Be sure you do this correctly, as we have no way of knowing it.

How do I care for my sash so it lasts?

If it needs cleaning, take it to a dry cleaner and tell them it is made of premium double-ply bridal satin.

To preserve it, the best thing you can do is put it in a shadow box and display it in your home or office. Otherwise, hang it in your closet away from direct sunlight, preferably in a dark-colored zippered garment bag.
